OPINIONS AND THOUGHTS



Opinions

   An opinion is the way you feel or think about something. Our opinion about something or someone is based on our perspective. Whenever we give or express our opinion, it is important to give reasoning or an example to support our opinion.

       We can use collocations to express opinions, for example strong argument, strong criticism, strong denial, strong opinion, strong resistance, quite strongly.

Let's look at the sentence structure to express opinions


• Expressions
   Opinions can be expressed in the ways given below.

  Personal Point Of View
    These expressions are used to show personal points of view.

  • In my opinion...
  • What i mean is...
  • In my humble opinion..
  • I think...
  • I would like yo point out that...
  • To my mind...
  • By this i mean...
  • Personally, i think...
  • In my experience...
  • As i understand...

 General Point Of View
    These expressions are used to show a general point of view. A general point of view creates a balance in writing and helps avoid absolute statements.

  • Most people don't agree...
  • Almost everyone...
  • Some people say that...
  • Some people believe...
  • Of course, many argue...
  • Generally it is accepted...
  • The majority disagree with...
  • While some people believe...
      You can agree or disagree as long as you have a reason for your opinion.

 Agreeing with an Opinion
   These are some ot the expressions used to express agreement with an Opinion.

  • Of course
  • This is absolutely right
  • I agree with this opinion
  • I couldn't agree more
  • I agree, i never thought of that
  • Neither do i
  • I think so too


 Disagreeing with an Opinion
    These are the expressions uset to express disagreement with an opinion.

  • I am sorry, i don't agree with you
  • I am not sure
  • I don't agree with you
  • I don't believe that
  • By this i mean...
  • I think you are wrong

* Example of a dialogue about giving opinion

Azzah : I want to buy a new phone, but the options out there are overwhelming me. Any advice?

Wahyu : You can just buy the one like mine. You don’t need much for a phone, do you? 

Azzah : Not really. Can I see yours? 

Wahyu : Pretty compact even if it’s 5 inch. The interface is also user friendly. 2GB RAM and 16GB internal memory.
Azzah : What do you think of it? Is it okay? 

Wahyu : For me, it’s enough, since I only use it for texting, chatting, checking e-mails, and making calls. I rarely use it for anything other than those. 

Azzah : I don’t think it would either. When did you buy this phone of yours?

Wahyu : Around three weeks ago, I guess.

Azzah : Then the price wouldn’t be so different now. Do you think the budget fit me? 

Wahyu : I think so. It’s pretty cheap compared to any other brand with the exact same feature. Trust me, this is a bargain. 

Azzah : All right. I’ll look for it. Thanks, Wahyu.

 Type 3 Conditional In type 3 conditional sentences, the tense in the if clause is the past perfect and the tense in the main clause is the perfect conditional or perfect continuous conditional. If clause (condition) Main clause (result / effect) If + past perfect perfect conditional or perfect continuous conditional If this thing had happened that thing would have happened. EXAMPLE If it had rained, you would have gotten wet. You would have gotten wet if it had rained. You would have passed your exam if you had worked harder. If you had worked harder, you would have passed your exam. I would have believed you if you hadn't lied to me before. If you hadn't lied to me before, I would have believed you. Function Type 3 conditionals refer to past probable conditions and possible past outcomes. In type 3 conditional sentences, the time is past and the situation is presupposed or not real.
